Leadership quality of a person depends on the inner self and your outer self. The inner self is what you represent and the outer self is what you do. Both are interdependent to get maximum effectiveness. To be person who can motivate others you have to think yourself as a role model for others. You have to set standards for others to follow. You have to think yourself to be watched by others. You have to show others that you have the qualities. Leadership is not ordering others to follow your instructions. You have to set examples for others to follow. Instead of trying to make other people obey you, you must lead a life that is admirable to others.
There are basically two types of power – ascribed power and position power. The position power is obtained from the job title or position in an organization. This will automatically give some powers to people depending on their job titles or ranks. You will have the right to give orders and others have to obey you whether they like it or not. Ascribed power is the created by a person in the mind of others based on the kind the person they are. Some people all respected by all even if they don’t hold any positions in an organization. Such people are the genuine leaders. A person who sees himself as a servant and does what ever he can to help others is performing a form of servant leadership.
In older day leaders where considered to be those who walks boldly with power and confidence only to give orders. They make decisions for others to obey and will not consider others opinion. But in the modern times a leader is a person who considers others opinion and take decisions after considering all the aspects. They have the ability to find consensus among everyone who are involved to implement that decision. A leader’s job is not to do the things themselves, they should stand strong to help others attain the target. You must have the ability to visualize all problems ahead. Others will have the confidence in you only when you can stand firm in case of emergency and offer your hand to help them.
The best way to motivate others is to get motivated yourself. As a leader you should be interested and committed to complete a project. If you don’t have the interest in accomplishing the goals then you cannot motivate others to achieve it. To be motivated you must be loyal and trustworthy. Trueness in life and profession is an essential quality of leadership. A true leader must be able to know what they are doing. The knowledge in the area you pursue is important to build the trust in others. You cannot guide others on what you are not aware of. Developing the technical skills in your area of work is essential to motivate others. You must be the best in that area so that others can relay on you in need.
